Julie de Libran Is Out as Creative Director at Sonia Rykiel
Julie de Libran, creative director of Sonia Rykiel, has left the company. WWD broke the news, adding that the company has been in steady financial decline for years and is looking for a new investor. “The house is not for sale,” a spokesperson clarified. “It is looking for a partner to enter its capital in order to increase its development.”
Sonia Rykiel has gone through several highs and lows since De Libran joined in 2014. It’s diffusion line, Sonia by Sonia Rykiel, shuttered in 2016. In 2018, De Libran threw a massive bash on the runway to celebrate the house’s 50th anniversary — complete with a performance by ’80s band Bananarama. Both the collection and the show were well-received. Later that year she presented the brand’s first-ever couture collection.
Though De Libran designed a collection for Fall 2019, Rykiel did not hold a show this season at Paris Fashion Week, instead opting to release a lookbook. The brand has yet to announce a new creative director.
